
Arizona net job loss was 7,200 jobs (-0.3%) in July. Arizona’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased two-tenths of a percentage point from 5.9% in June to 6.1% in July. The U.S. seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 5.3% in July. A year ago, the Arizona seasonally adjusted rate was 6.7% and the U.S. rate was 6.2%.
Over the Month
The Private Sector gained 6,300 jobs. However, government lost 13,500 jobs, with the majority of losses coming from Local Government Education (-12,900 jobs). Gains were fairly broad-based in July; eight of the eleven sectors gained jobs, while three posted losses. The largest gain was in Professional & Business Services, which added 3,700 jobs. Gains were also reported in Trade, Transportation and Utilities (1,600 jobs), Construction (1,100 jobs), Manufacturing (900 jobs), Other Services (600 jobs), Financial Activities (400 jobs), Information (200 jobs) and Natural Resources and Mining (200 jobs). Government (-13,500 jobs), Leisure and Hospitality (-2,200 jobs) and Educational and Health Services (-200 jobs) all posted losses.
Over the Year
Arizona Nonfarm employment grew by 2.7% (67,600 jobs) over the year in July. The Private Sector accounted for all of the gains, adding 73,500 jobs. Government employment fell by 5,900 jobs in July. Eight of the eleven major sectors reported job gains and three reported losses. The sectors with the largest gains included Professional and Business Services (18,600 jobs) and Education & Health Services (16,600 jobs). Other gains were reported in Leisure & Hospitality (13,700 jobs), Trade, Transportation and Utilities (7,500 jobs), Other Services (7,000 jobs), Construction (5,300 jobs), Financial Activities (5,200 jobs) and Manufacturing (200 jobs). Over-the-year job losses were reported in Government (-5,900), Natural Resources & Mining (-500 jobs), and Information (-100 jobs).
PHOENIX – Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased two-tenth of a percentage point from 5.8 in June to 6.0 in July. Phoenix shed 6,500 nonfarm jobs (-6.5%) from June. A year ago, the Phoenix seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.3%, the Arizona rate was 6.7% and the US rate was 6.2%. The largest loss sector was in education (-13.2%).
TUCSON – Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased three-tenth of a percentage point from 5.9% in June to 6.2% in July an increase of 1,200 more unemployed. Tucson shed 2,300 nonfarm jobs (-2.3%) from June. A year ago, the Tucson seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.6%. The largest losses were in education (-11.3%) and mining (-4.3%) sectors.
