Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty is proud to announce that Dr. Mary Kay Klein has been honored with the Theilen Tribute Award.

Tucson, AZ — At the 2018 Veterinary Cancer Society Conference in Louisville, KY, Dr. Mary Kay Klein was honored with the Theilen Tribute Award, an accolade founded to honor distinguished veterinary professionals who have advanced the practice of veterinary oncology over his or her career. It is a highly esteemed award in the veterinary community. “Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty is very elated. The team couldn’t be more proud of Mary and her achievements,” says Sue Frey, Certified Veterinary Technician & Hospital Manager. To date, this accolade has only been awarded to 4 other individuals. It was first presented to Dr. Gordon Theilen at the Theilen Tribute Symposium held at UC Davis in May of 2008.

Dr. Mary Kay Klein has focused her medical career on the diagnosis and treatment of animal cancer, and in addition to her work with the Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialists, she holds an adjunct faculty position at the University of Arizona Cancer Center. She was raised in Tucson and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Arizona in 1979. She then traveled to Colorado State University to attend veterinary school and graduated with honors in 1983. After returning home to Arizona for two years and working at the University of Arizona Cancer Therapy Study, Dr. Klein returned to Colorado State University for a three-year oncology residency and became board-certified in medical oncology in 1990. She became board-certified in radiation oncology in 1996. Dr. Klein continues her research interests as a clinical lecturer at the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

Author of numerous articles and textbook chapters, Dr. Klein also served as president for the Veterinary Cancer Society in 2000-2002 and is currently the President-Elect of the American College of Veterinary Radiology Specialty of Radiation Oncology. She now adds the honor of Theilen Tribute Award to her accolades.

Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center was established in 1994 by Dr. Reuben Merideth and Dr. Mary Kay Klein to meet the needs of the southwest veterinary community for multiple specialty animal hospitals in Tucson, offering the services of board-certified veterinarians. The original specialty services included dentistry, dermatology, internal medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, and surgery.
