Be Heard at COT Hearing on Fry’s at 22nd & Houghton –

Houghton & 22nd St aerial
Northeast corner of Houghton & 22nd Street

The public is invited to attend the Tucson Mayor and Council Hearing on Tuesday, March 8 at 5:30 pm City Hall, 255 W. Alameda, to voice support of the Fry’s rezoning at the northeast corner 22nd Street & Houghton Road. This development project is due to be voted on at this time.

Fry’s and their developer, Brentwood Development Company, are requesting an amendment to the Eastside Neighborhood Plan to allow for 26 foot ceiling height (up from 20 feet). As has already been allowed at Walgreens at Broadway Blvd and Houghton Road.

The Eastside Neighborhood Plan states that it is appropriate for this corner to be used for commercial uses allowing C-1 zoning.

A new expanded and upgraded Fry’s Marketplace with adjacent retail and restaurants is exactly what this area needs. This is a major intersection located on a major six lane arterial. A grocery anchored neighborhood shopping center is very appropriate for this corner. The old Fry’s store at 22nd Street and Harrison Road is small and outdated. The new Fry’s Marketplace would be convenient and welcomed by growing eastside.

It is extremely important that the City of Tucson adopt a position that supports responsible development. A conveniently located premier grocery store is a desired enhancement to the quality of life. It would help create jobs and increase much needed tax revenue, both of which are necessary for Tucson to prosper and thrive. For all of these reasons, it is important to voice your support of this plan amendment and the subsequent rezoning to enable the development of this neighborhood shopping center.
