(October 23, 2024) -- U.S. import prices decreased 0.1 percent over the year ended September 2024. Prices for U.S. exports decreased 2.1 percent over the past year, the largest 12-month decrease since January 2024. Over the month, from August to September 2024, import prices decreased 0.4 percent, while export prices decreased 0.7 percent.
By end use category, import and export prices for industrial supplies and materials were lower over the year ended in September 2024. Import prices for industrial supplies and materials, which made up 23 percent of total imports, fell 4.3 percent over the 12-month period. Export prices for these goods, which were 38 percent of exports, fell 6.3 percent.
End-use capital goods import prices, which accounted for 29 percent of imports, increased 0.4 percent over the year. Capital goods export prices, which accounted for 32 percent of exports, were up 1.6 percent.
Prices for end-use automotive vehicles, parts, and engines increased 2.7 percent for imports and 2.9 percent for exports, representing 14 percent of imports and 9 percent of exports, respectively.
Import prices of consumer goods, excluding automotives, which were 27 percent of imports, increased 0.8 percent; export prices of consumer goods, excluding automotives, 13 percent of exports, decreased 0.9 percent over the year.
