PIMA COUNTY, (June 1, 2023) – Pima Animal Care Center’s Animal Protection Services (APS) team assisted the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in impounding more than 80 birds as part of a cockfighting case and is now looking for homes for 20 roosters.
PACC’s APS team seized 20 live roosters and approximately 60 live chicks and hens in the bust. PACC has found adopters for the hens and chicks, but the shelter is looking for adopters and rescue placement for the remaining roosters.
“PACC and other organizations across the country have had great success in adopting these roosters out as pets into loving homes,” said Monica Dangler, PACC’s Director of Animal Services. “We are confident that these birds will make excellent pets.”
The birds are currently being behaviorally and medically evaluated. PACC estimates that the birds will be available for adoption or rescue on Thursday, June 1. For those interested in adopting, they should email pacc.adopt@pima.gov with the subject line “Rooster adoption.” All roosters adopted will be sent home with a rooster harness and crate courtesy of PACC’s official nonprofit partner, Friends of Pima Animal Care Center. The roosters will also be microchipped as a safety precaution. Interested adopters must live outside of city limits and have no other roosters on their property (or the ability to keep them separated).
PACC is located at 4000 N. Silverbell Road and is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from noon to 7 p.m., on Wednesday from 1:30 to 7 p.m., and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All adoptions are currently free. Adult dogs require a $20 licensing fee. To learn more about available PACC pets and services, please go to www.pima.gov/animalcare.
