Sundt Ranks No. 5 on ENR’s Top Southwest Contractors List

TUCSON, Ariz –  Sundt Construction, Inc., ranked No. 5 on Engineering News Record’s (ENR) 2021 Top Southwest Contractors list. ENR, the construction industry’s principal trade publication, generates its regional list based on the prior year’s construction revenue. Sundt has consistently ranked in the top five of ENR Southwest’s Top Contractors.

Sundt reported over $654.72 million in construction revenue in the Southwest during 2020. More than $163 million came from manufacturing projects, placing Sundt No. 2 in that sector. Besides its manufacturing revenue, 30% of its revenue in the region was from general buildings and 21% from sewage and solid waste projects.

The following southwest region projects were included in the company’s 2020 revenue figures: Gila River Hotels & Casino – Wildhorse Pass Expansion, Sun Health’s Grandview Terrace remodel and expansion, Inspirata Pointe at Royal Oaks, UArizona’s Student Success District, Interstate-10 and Ruthrauff Road interchange improvements, Benedictine Monastery’s renovation and new apartment buildings, The Gallery on Fifth apartments, the renovation and improvements to the Tucson Convention Center, a confidential Fortune 500 data center project and work for a global semiconductor manufacturing company.

Nationally, Sundt ranks No. 58 on ENR’s 2021 Top 400 contractors list. Headquartered in Tempe, Sundt also ranked No. 55 on the publication’s national list of Top 100 Design-Build Firms and No. 52 on its national list of Top 100 Construction Management-at-Risk Firms.




Haydon Building Corp builds for future as it celebrates prestigious award and its 30th anniversary

PHOENIX, ARIZONA – Haydon Building Corp, one of the largest general contractors in the Southwest with the unique ability to provide turnkey solutions to its clients, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a prestigious award and the passing of the torch to new leadership.

Headquartered in Phoenix, Haydon was founded in 1991 and has grown to more than 450 employees. For the past 30 years, Haydon has provided construction management at-risk (CMAR), design-build and general contracting services for both the public and private sectors.

“It’s hard for me to imagine that it’s been 30 years,” said Haydon President Gary Haydon. “It certainly doesn’t seem like it now, but the most exciting thing is transitioning the company to the next generation and thinking about what they will do with it. I’m proud of what we’ve put together here.”

Haydon was named 2021 ENR Southwest Contractor of the Year. It was honored for its commitment to employees and culture, in addition to a strong portfolio of projects and record-breaking backlog. Haydon doubled its revenue over the past three years, from about $150 million in 2017 to nearly $300 million in 2020.

Haydon also announced a succession plan with the promotions of Executive Vice President | Partner Katie Haydon Perry and COO | Senior Vice President Matt Carpenter. Katie Haydon Perry is transitioning into the role as president of the company over the next two years.

Haydon’s recent projects include the $30 million Legacy Sports Complex Athletic Fields and Infrastructure in Mesa; the $100 million Hance Park revitalization in Phoenix; the $35 million Banner Aspera medical office building in Glendale; and the $22 million Lindsay Road & SR202L freeway traffic interchange in Gilbert.

Haydon started out as SDB Building Division then changed its name in 1998. Besides Gary Haydon, its leadership includes Fritz Behrhorst, who joined the company in 1993, and is currently Vice President of Pre-Construction, Building Division and Partner; Les Keeble, Vice President of Risk Management/Partner, he joined Haydon in 1994; and Mark Eklund, Vice President/Heavy Civil/Partner, he joined Haydon in 1998 and launched the heavy civil division.

“Fritz, Mark, Les and I have worked hard for a lot of years to develop what we have today,” Gary Haydon said. “But we didn’t get here without all our people. It’s exciting to see Matt and Katie and their generation take it and go with it.”

As Haydon looks to the future it boasts a technology, H3D Solutions (a wholly-owned virtual construction subsidiary), that was created in 2019. Led by Jason Young, Director of Virtual Construction, H3D provides state-of-the-art modeling, coordination and reality capture services across the construction spectrum.

Marana Town Clerk Receives Master of Municipal Clerk from IIMC

MARANA, ARIZONA — Cherry Lawson, Town Clerk of the Town of Marana, has earned the prestigious designation of Master Municipal Clerk (MMC) from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. This designation is achieved by dedicated time and effort, and displays proficiency in the role of Town Clerk.

The MMC program is an advanced continuing education program that prepares participants to perform complex municipal duties. The program has an extensive and rigorous educational component and a professional and social contribution component.

Lawson has served as a City Clerk/Elections Administrator and Records Manager for 18 years. Her previous titles include City Clerk/Township Clerk for the City of Bloomington and Bloomington Township, as well as the City Clerk, Elections Administrator, Records Manager, and Cemetery Administrator for the City of Mesquite, Nevada; City Clerk and Records Manager for the City of Sedona, and City Clerk for the City of Ypsilanti, Michigan

Lawson has had a career in inpatient treatment and community mental health as a youth counselor/advocate for over 15 years, and as a Case Manager/Housing Resource Specialist.  Being a public servant was the career path Cherry wanted to pursue, as she saw it as an extension of being able to continue to serve the public beyond the community mental health field.
