TUCSON, Ariz. (August 28, 2025) – Cushman & Wakefield | PICOR is pleased to announce that El Califa de León, the world’s first and only Michelin-starred taquería, will be bringing its renowned tacos to Tucson this September.
Through a temporary lease at 994 E. University Boulevard in Main Gate Square, directly across from the University of Arizona campus, Tucson diners will have a rare chance to experience a global culinary icon. The lease was brokered by Natalie Furrier and Greg Furrier, Retail Specialists with Cushman & Wakefield | PICOR.
A Mexico City institution since 1968, El Califa de León is known for its minimalist approach to excellence. Rather than white linens or elaborate presentations, the restaurant’s reputation is built on handmade tortillas, premium meats, and time-honored recipes. The taquería has drawn crowds in cities across the U.S. with previous pop-ups in Tempe, New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Miami.
Founder Juan Hernández González famously said, “Do you want to know the secret of the meat? There is no secret, only love and effort.” Today, his son Mario Hernández Alonso carries on that legacy, serving classics such as bistec (seared steak), chuleta (pork), costilla (thin-sliced beef), and the signature gaonera (ribeye), all wrapped in warm handmade corn tortillas with a squeeze of lime.
This fall, Tucson will get a taste of one of the world’s most celebrated taquerías—Michelin-starred, steeped in tradition, and now part of the vibrant Main Gate Square dining scene.
