Pima County pools open May 29

PIMA COUNTY, Arizona – Pima County will reopen its public swimming pools over Memorial Day weekend. All nine pools — except the Northwest YMCA, which is closed for renovations — will open on Saturday, May 29.

In addition to offering relief from the summer heat for Pima County residents, the pools offer swimming lessons for children ages 3 1/2 and up. Swimming lessons are provided in two-week sessions of eight classes, with the first session beginning Monday, June 7. Lessons are $20 per session and registration is available online at www.pima.gov/pools. Online registration for swim lessons opened May 18.

The Novice Summer Swim Team is offered at all Pima County pools except for the Picture Rocks pool. The fee is $20 for the entire summer. Registration for the Novice Summer Swim Team is open and available online at www.pima.gov/swimteam. Registration continues until June 11, or until the team at a specific pool reaches capacity.

The first swim practice is June 1. Rather than in-person swim meets, this year’s swim team program will use a time trial system. For more information about how to participate, read the swim team information packet at www.pima.gov/swimteam.

The Junior Lifeguard Program is designed to prepare tweens and teens between the ages of 11 and 15 to become future lifeguards. This program does not certify participants in first aid, CPR or AED (automated external defibrillation), nor certify as a lifeguard, but will introduce the participants to skills needed for entry to the Lifeguarding course.

The program runs from July 5-29. The fee is $30 for the entire program and includes a Pima County Junior Lifeguard T-shirt as well as a certificate for participants who successfully complete the program. You can register at www.pima.gov/pools.

In keeping with Pima County policy, members of the public are required to wear masks when entering county buildings. Individuals who have not been vaccinated, or who are not fully vaccinated, are strongly advised to wear masks in public places when distancing cannot easily be maintained.

Fully vaccinated people are those who are two weeks past their second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or two weeks past the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The schedule for swimming lessons, information on pool admission fees, pool hours, locations and phone numbers, as well as information on the Junior Lifeguard program, can be found at www.pima.gov/pools. For additional swim team information, call 520-724-5189 or visit www.pima.gov/swimteam.
