TUCSON, ARIZONA (May 17, 2023) -- Every renter’s dream is to get the best location and the most space within their budget. RentCafe annual report comes with good news: For a monthly budget of $1,500, more than half (56%) of America’s 200 largest cities are roomier than the national average of 782 square feet — and Tucson is one of them.

In fact, for the monthly budget of $1,500, Tucson is the only city in Arizona that offers over 900 square feet. Meanwhile, two-thirds of the cities in Metro Phoenix offer less than the national threshold.

Here are the details:

  • Tucson ranked 1st in Arizona and 4th among the big cities in the West for its generous two- or even three-bedroom apartments of 923 square feet for $1,500. That’s 65 square feet less than Spokane, WA, the city occupying the first spot, and more than 100 square feet compared to Mesa, the city which ranked second in Arizona.
  •  In both Mesa and Glendale renters can live on a budget and can get one- or two-bedroom apartments of around 810 square feet. The average rent in these two cities is roughly $1,500.
  • Phoenix, along with Chandler and Gilbert, offers a little less space than the national average of 782 square feet. In Phoenix, the average rent is $1,556, while in the other two cities the average rent is a little over $1,800.
  •  Scottsdale ranks 20th among the big Western cities, while statewide it offers the least amount of space for a $1,500 rent budget. Renters have to squeeze in 674 square feet on average here.
