Tucson, AZ (September 22, 2025) - The Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area (SCVNHA) announces the opening of its 2025–2026 Small Fund Rolling Grant program. This initiative supports conservation, preservation, and interpretation projects that further the SCVNHA mission and management plan to enhance the natural, cultural, and historic assets of the region. This is the third consecutive year the SCVNHA has shared its federal funding by way of these grants. Since 2023, more than $550,000 has been invested in local, community-led projects.
“We are thrilled to finally offer these additional grants which are funded with our 2025 federal fiscal year appropriations. A portion of our funds had been held up by the federal budget’s continuing resolution process, but thanks to the bipartisan support of Congress, the full funding finally came through. And now we are able continue our work with partnering organizations,” explained Lesley Kontowicz, Executive Director of the SCVNHA.
“National Heritage Areas (NHAs) play a vital role in preserving our history, strengthening local culture, and connecting communities to the public lands we treasure. I fought for the timely release of authorized funds and strongly support increased appropriations for NHAs, which provide deep value to Arizona and across the country,” Congressman Juan Ciscomani said. “Our local Arizona NHAs, the Santa Cruz Valley and Yuma Crossing, showcase the unique cultural legacy and natural beauty of our state. As someone deeply committed to the stewardship of our public lands, I will continue advocating for the resources that allow these special places to thrive for generations to come.”

Earlier this year, the SCVNHA funded five organizations through a competitive grant cycle which awarded up to $25,000 per project. This new round of funding—totaling $57,800—will award up to $10,000 per project and remain open until all funds have been awarded. Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) nonprofits; city, county, state, or tribal governments; and accredited educational institutions that have operated within the SCVNHA boundaries for at least two years. Projects must occur within the SCVNHA boundaries.
