TUCSON, AZ (May 2, 2024) -- Plan Tucson is the City of Tucson’s General Plan, a growth plan reflecting our community’s shared goals and diverse aspirations for the next 20 years. This long-range policy document is central to defining Tucson's future, addressing vital areas such as housing, transportation, climate action, and growth.
Tucson has a rich history, but we must evolve to meet the needs of our developing community. As our city grows, we must balance resources while meeting our housing demands.
The Plan Tucson team has drafted the Future Growth Scenario Map using the community's ideas and extensive city data.
As we update Plan Tucson, a key question for our community is how best to plan for our city's future growth and evolution.
The Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity(External link), using data and analysis from the Pima Association of Governments (PAG)(External link), expects Tucson's population to increase by approximately 77,000 between 2022 and 2060. The General Plan is a tool for planning how to meet our current and future needs for housing, infrastructure, amenities, and employment opportunities for our community.
Through careful planning, we can guide future growth and development and move our City in a positive direction. Plan Tucson, the citywide general plan, includes goals and policies to support our growing housing, services, and employment needs. One such policy is the illustrative "Future Growth Scenario Map."
The Future Growth Scenario Map is an important tool for shaping Tucson's future because it influences (but does not determine) land use and development. The map, developed using data on infrastructural capacity, development trends, and community preferences, depicts a citywide development pattern that can accommodate our anticipated population growth. How our city is designed and built, in turn, has implications for climate resilience, transportation, infrastructure, open space, and more.
