Sundt awarded $16.3 Million Contract for construction of PACC facility

Construction of Phase 1 to begin in February

PIMA COUNTY, Arizona – On Tuesday, Jan. 17, the Pima County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an amended award of $16,294,393 to Sundt Construction, Inc. for the construction phase of the new voter-approved Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) 23,700-square-feet new facility.

The approved contract will allow Sundt to begin constructing the new PACC facility, authorized by voters through Proposition 415 in November 2014.

As part of the award, Sundt has agreed to construct the new building and other aspects of the facility within the contract value of $16,540,236. This amount includes $245,843 awarded to Sundt in August 2015 for preconstruction activities.

Sundt will construct the new PACC facility in two phases. Phase 1, which is the construction of the new building, starts in February and will be substantially completed by December 2017. At its completion, the public, PACC’s pets and staff will move to the new building while Sundt starts working on other construction activities associated with Phase 2.

When finished, the new shelter will be double in size measuring at about 60,000 square feet with nearly 93 percent of this total area allocated to functions that directly house or support the housing, care, and adoption of pets at PACC.

Since the bond passed in 2014, the County has held dozens of meetings with PACC’s community partners, jurisdictional stakeholders, staff, volunteers and the community to ensure the new facility meets the shelter’s current needs while also incorporating modern animal care practices.

In addition, the County has sold $22 million in bonds to acquire the funds necessary for this project and selected the architect, contractor and artist through competitive bidding processes. The County also acquired additional land from Tucson Electric Power and the City of Tucson for the expansion, completed an extensive archaeological investigation, gathered all necessary building permits and developed the groundwork needed to begin construction.

Throughout the preconstruction stages of this project, the County has worked extensively with PACC to relocate some of its services, including the spay and neuter clinic, to keep its shelter operational and open to the public while the new facility is completed.
