PIMA COUNTY, ARIZONA -- Pima County encourages students to use active transportation to get to school during the week of October 4 - 8, 2021 by hosting Walk 'N' Roll to School Week. The purpose of this week-long event is to promote active ways to get to school, such as walking, biking, scootering, skateboarding, or rollerblading, in order to reduce congestion and emissions from motor vehicles near schools. Walk 'N' Roll to School Week also promotes physical fitness, builds community, and inspires families to use their feet more often for their school commute.

Pima County schools will join thousands of other schools around the country to encourage walking and rolling throughout the school year in celebration of National Walk to School Day on October 6. Students from participating schools who walk or roll to school during the week will receive a special prize and be entered into a drawing to receive a scooter as a grand prize.

The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality (PDEQ) will host a media event at Los Amigos Elementary School, located at 2200 E. Drexel Road, on October 6, 2021 at 7:30 a.m. Los Amigos has a very successful "walking school bus" program that they host every Wednesday and represents a wonderful example of how a school can encourage regular active transportation through coordinated efforts with families.

"We are thrilled to have nearly 90 students joining our walking school bus this school year; and we hope the Walk 'N' Roll to School week will encourage even more to join for a chance to win a scooter," said Jennifer Flores, the Los Amigos Librarian and Walk 'N' Roll to School Coordinator.

Walk 'N' Roll to School Week is funded by the PDEQ and the Pima County Health Department.
