TARIconAs the leading advocate for home ownership and property rights in Southern Arizona, the Tucson Association of REALTORS® (TAR) joins agents, lenders and home buyers across American to honor Fair Housing Month in April.

“TAR and its 4,800 members strongly support the Fair Housing Act and believes that anyone who is able and willing to assume the responsibilities of owning a home should have the opportunity to pursue that dream,” said Nicole Brule-Fisher, TAR President.

The Act prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, sexual orientation or disability.  It became law in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson, just one week after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.  It has been updated over the years and is enforced by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“Our members work tirelessly in diverse neighborhoods across Southern Arizona and believe people have a right to live wherever they can afford to live.  Equal access to housing is vital to all and as the voice of real estate in Southern Arizona, the Tucson Association of REALTORS® is at the forefront of educating the public and our membership in promoting fair housing for all,” Brule-Fisher said.  “Fair Housing Month is exceptionally important and reconfirms our commitment to the fair housing laws that helped shape our great nation."

For TAR, “every month is Fair Housing Month.  With every conversation, interaction and transaction, REALTORS® strive to promote inclusion, diversity and fairness in our housing community.  Fair housing is not optional, it's the law and the TAR is committed to achieving diversity and fairness is all aspects of housing,” she added.

Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act), as amended, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (including children under the age of 18 living with parents or legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18), and disability.
