PIMA COUNTY – On Tuesday, March 21, the Pima County Board of Supervisors, in a 4-1 vote, approved a plan for naming opportunities of the January 8th Memorial, which includes a donation agreement and acceptance of a $500,000 donation from Tucson Medical Center.
Tucson's January 8th Memorial Foundation planned this permanent memorial to honor the victims of the Jan. 8, 2011 shootings that killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. The memorial will be located on the west and north side of the Old Pima County Courthouse, 115 N. Church Ave. in downtown Tucson.
The plan authorizes the County Administrator to approve donations up to $50,000 for naming opportunities in The Memorial Gardens Walk and The Courthouse Garden, with all donations exceeding that amount going to the Board for approval. The proceeds generated will help the Foundation pay for the memorial. TMC specifically earmarked its $500,000 donation for the design and construction costs of the memorial.
In addition to approving the donations, the County will assist with finalizing the design and construction materials for the January 8th Memorial. However, County officials have no plans to allocate any public funds to this project.
