Wil Cardon 1971-2017

Republished from the Arizona Daily Independent

Arizona State Senator Steve Montenegro was just one of many politicos who expressed deep sadness over the news that Wil Cardon passed away on Saturday. According to his wife, Nicole, Cardon struggled with depression.

The Arizona Republic reported that he committed suicide.

“He tried mightily for us, for himself and for all to overcome it,” Nicole Cardon said. “We are proud of how he faced this disease with openness and honesty. Today it finally took him, as it takes far too many.”

The family has asked for privacy.

Jeff Flake defeated Cardon in the 2012 U.S. Senate Republican Primary. Cardon, a successful businessman, also ran in the 2014 Secretary of State Primary.

Cardon is survived by his wife and 5 children.

Nicole Cardon’s complete statement:

Today a father, husband, son, brother, and friend to so many left our family to be with the greatest angels, of which you will now be one.

The only thing that can ease tears at a moment like this is remembering Wil’s smile that was as wide as Arizona, especially when it came to our five children.

His gregarious approach to life, business, or family and his faith in enriched all who are fortunate to enjoy his warm embrace.

I know firsthand the incredible love he had for people. Although highly successful in the business and philanthropic arenas, I think the moments I witnessed with our children, helping a person on the side of the road, or even applying to be a high school coach or what gave him the most joy.

It is no secret Wil struggled with depression. He tried mightily for us, for himself and for all to overcome it. We are proud of how he faced this disease with openness and honesty. Today it finally took him as it takes far too many.

Few would want to say more about the person we will remember forever than our family, but we hope our privacy can be respected to grieve, and to plan a tribute that has come far too early.

Cardon hails from a pioneer Arizona family.

The Cardon Oil Co. was founded by Wilford Pratt "Pat" Cardon, Cardon's grandfather, who died in 1969. Wilford A. Cardon, Cardon's father, is credited with growing the petroleum and gas-station business, expanding into convenience stores, and real-estate investment and development. The Cardon Group's portfolio includes Subway and Dunkin' Donuts stores, among numerous other investments in Arizona.
