Maverick the Mastiff

TUCSON, AZ (April 1, 2026) — Hi, I’m Maverick the Mastiff, and I have an important announcement. No, this is not an April Fools’ joke. The Tucson 4th Annual Pooch Playoffs are underway, and I’m asking for your vote as this tail-wagging fundraiser heads into the Final 4, with voting in this round open through 6 p.m. on April 1.

The Pooch Playoffs, organized by Amanda Sue Photography and benefiting The Sanctuary Project, brought together 16 dogs in a bracket-style competition inspired by March Madness. It is a fun way for dog lovers, families, and local supporters to rally behind their favorite pups while helping raise money for rescue dogs in need.

"Maverick is the definition of a gentle giant — handsome, steady, and as sweet as they come. With beautiful markings, giant grin, and calm, stoic presence, he has a way of making people feel both impressed and completely at ease," they say. "He may be massive, but underneath it all, Maverick is just one big softie with a heart of gold. With his brother Goose by his side, he brings less fighter pilot energy and more loyal, leading-man charm."

I may be a Mastiff, but even I know this event is about more than good looks and slobbery charm. The fundraiser supports The Sanctuary Project, a rescue organization serving Tucson, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Voting is free, donations go directly to the cause, and supporters can vote twice per round.

The event began with photo sessions from Feb. 15 through March 15, followed by online voting from March 27 through April 4. The winner will be announced on April 4 during a celebration at Noble Hops in Oro Valley from 2 to 4 p.m.

Every participating dog received more than just a moment in the spotlight. The entry includes a portrait session, a featured voting image, a swag bag from local businesses, and a keepsake keychain. Each dog owner also paid a $125 session fee that benefits The Sanctuary Project, and 10 percent of portrait and wall art purchases are donated as well.

This year’s Pooch Playoffs also highlights the support of local sponsors and partners, including Ina Road Animal Hospital, Tucson Roadrunners, Gilbert Law Firm, Elysium Legal & Tax, Frenchy’s, Noble Hops, The Emily & Eric Team, HattenBatter, Button Brew House, Dynamic Beauty, Painting & Vino Tucson, and Promotion Outfitters.

From my point of view, this is what a community should look like: local businesses pitching in, pet lovers getting involved, and rescue dogs getting the support they deserve. My people work in real estate, so supporting local businesses, community partnerships, and good causes is just part of who we are. Sure, I’d love to win. I am a Mastiff, after all, and we do have a certain presence. But the real victory is helping more dogs find safety, care, and forever homes.

So if you have not voted yet, now is the time. I am Maverick the Mastiff, and I would be honored to have your support in this year’s Tucson Pooch Playoffs.
