GILBERT, ARIZ. (May 27, 2025) – Sundt Construction, currently leading the Gilbert Water Treatment Project, has been awarded a state grant through Arizona’s BuildItAZ Apprenticeship Initiative. The grant is part of a second round of awards totaling more than $1 million, aimed at growing high-quality construction apprenticeship programs statewide.
Among the stories highlighting the initiative’s impact is that of Destiny Lipkin, a Gilbert-based Sundt apprentice whose career journey began in high school.
“From dual enrollment to my pre-apprenticeship, and now beginning my apprenticeship, these programs have guided me every step of the way,” Lipkin shared. “Since I was 16, I’ve been learning the foundations of heavy equipment operations, supported by knowledgeable mentors who’ve helped turn my passion into a clear career path.”
Lipkin’s progress on the Gilbert project reflects the broader goals of BuildItAZ, launched in 2023 to connect Arizonans with career opportunities in the skilled trades. Nearly 3,000 apprentices have enrolled so far, with a goal to double that number by 2026. The program offers critical financial support—including tuition, tools, transportation, and childcare—helping to remove barriers and open doors to long-term careers in construction.
“This BuildItAZ grant is a significant enhancement for Sundt’s workforce development initiatives in Arizona,” said Nicole Calamaio, Sundt’s Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. “These funds will expand apprenticeship opportunities, empower more women to enter the construction industry, and provide Spanish-speaking residents in Maricopa County with accessible training and career pathways.”
The funding underscores Sundt’s commitment to building a diverse, skilled workforce reflective of the communities it serves.
