Funding to Support Graduate Students in Geotechnical Engineering
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Terracon Foundation announced a $10,000 university grant to the University of Arizona (UA) College of Engineering / Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Mechanics to fund two $5,000 scholarships for graduate students with an interest in geotechnical engineering, including materials and structural-related areas, to ensure they have the resources to successfully complete their studies.
UA has launched a strategic plan to reshape the university with a focus on preparing students for the 4th Industrial Revolution and minimizing student debt burden. With nearly 27,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the National Science Foundation ranks it No. 4 in physical sciences research. In the College of Engineering, UA has more than 900 students enrolled in STEM areas of study at the graduate level.
“Many civil engineering students are supported as graduate research or teaching assistants or receive support from other scholarship programs,” said Derek Koller, CIH, CHMM, office manager in Terracon’s Tucson office who championed the grant. “This grant will be allocated to students with financial need. We are looking to help students graduate on schedule as some are delayed due to funding challenges.”
To date, the Terracon Foundation has granted more than $3 million to community organizations, universities, dependents of employees, and for disaster relief efforts. For more information about the Terracon Foundation and other organizations it has supported, visit terracon.com/foundation.
