Below is a summary of each award winner:
REALTOR® of Year: Wendy Trush, Tierra Antigua Realty, this award recognizes an individual who contributes to the overall real estate industry as a strong leader; and to the community as valued volunteer. Trush serves on the boards of TAR and the Tucson REALTORS® Charitable Foundation; chairing the Foundation’s Fundraising Committee. For the TAR Housing Opportunities Committee, she teaches financial literacy to high school students and adults. She participates in Junior Achievement and Meals on Wheels. At Tierra Antigua, she teaches, coaches and mentors new agents. She also teaches continuing education in the industry.
Affiliate of Year: Kim Dees, Washington Federal, Affiliate members are key participants and supporters of TAR, and are honored for serving TAR with distinction. Dees, an expert in home loans, was recognized for her quality customer service. She understands the need to be flexible with borrowers, that each mortgage must fit the exact needs of the client. She serves on the Tucson REALTORS® Charitable Foundation and is Vice Chair of the Housing Opportunities Committee. She helped develop the curriculum and activities to teach financial literacy to high school students and taught classes. Dees also is active in the Women’s Council of REALTORS®.
Drachman Community Achievement: Aaron Wilson of Keller Williams. This honor recognizes a REALTOR® for community service and involvement that advances the profession. It honors Roy P. Drachman, a well-known Tucson REALTOR®, innovative commercial developer and generous philanthropist. Wilson led a widespread effort that raised over $30,000 for Honor Flight Southern Arizona. That was enough money to fund an entire three-day trip to Washington, DC. for 80 World War II veterans to see the memorial built in their honor. Thanks to Aaron, Honor Flight was able to charter a plane for the first-time. That was a significant achievement since most of the veterans were in wheelchairs. Aaron, a 20-year Air Force veteran, raised money locally and also organized a fund-raising bike ride across Iowa.
Johnoff Community Achievement: Stewart Title; President John Rafferty. This award recognized an Affiliate company and the collective efforts of its employees for their community service and involvement in TAR. Johnoff was the association’s first women president in 1977 and a leader in civic service. The Stewart Title team had representation at every TAR function this past year. They were key financial supporters and sponsors of several major TAR and Charitable Foundation activities. Individually, their employees took a high-profile presence at activities such as Affiliate meetings; Seize the Day; Young Professional Network; and various TAR mixers, educational classes, and other business-related activities.
Corporate Community Achievement Award: Long Realty Company – CEO Rosey Koberlein. This honor recognizes a company that demonstrated exceptional commitment to making our community better. It is one of the more competitive categories because so many companies do many good things during the year. Long Realty was honored for their overall involvement and civic contributions that focus on being good corporate partners and strong community builders. The keystone of their philanthropy is the Long Realty Cares Foundation. Established in 2002, it has given over $2 million to over 170 different local charities.
Outstanding Service Award: Jerome King, Long Realty Company. This award recognizes an individual who has served TAR and the broader real estate industry with distinction. Since 2002, King has shared his expertise and leadership at the statewide level, serving on the Arizona Association of REALTORS® (AAR) Risk Management Committee. He has worked on issues such as purchase contracts, resales purchase contracts, and short sales. He also has served as an AAR Board Member. King has helped to educate other REALTORS® throughout Tucson, southeast Arizona, Sierra Vista, Green Valley and Sahuarita. He also donates his time to Continuing Education as an Arizona Department of Real Estate instructor.
Committee of Year: Housing Opportunities. As TAR’s top-performing committee, this volunteer group, chaired by Tom Heath of Bancapital Home Loans, was honored for advancing the goals of the association. This committee develops financial literacy programs, builds community partnerships and prepares people for responsible and successful home ownership. It presents the From High School to Home Ownership program. For adults, it partnered with the United Way to provide financial workshops. Both programs raise awareness of the importance of financial stability. This committee orchestrated the Seize the Day event that promoted 49 local non-profits and their services. And in collaboration with the University of Arizona, it is finalist for an MPA Common Grounds award for Arizona Financial Faceoff. About 225 people attended the annual installation and awards luncheon at the Westin La Paloma hotel resort. The theme was Pay It Forward. Rosey Koberlein, CEO of Long Companies, served as MC.
“As we look forward to 2014, I am confident that our new leaders will continue the progress that was made by our 2013 leadership. Next year will be a transition period for real estate in Southern Arizona and I am confident the right talent is in place to advance the goals of our association,” said TAR CEO Philip Tedesco, RCE, CAE.
