TUCSON, Arizona -- Tuesday morning's fire at The Mark at Tucson is estimated to have caused in excess of $1 million in damage. The fire destroyed major portions of the multi-story student housing building scheduled to open fall 2019 while still under construction, as well as significantly damaging/destroying construction cranes at the site. Tucson Fire arrived on the scene at around 2:00 AM to find the construction site fire.
Located on the north side of Broadway and bordered by Tyndall Ave to the west, Park Ave to the east and 10th Street to the south Landmark Properties, dba The Mark at Tucson, is the owner of this, its second student housing project site at 931-949 East Broadway Blvd. in Tucson.
Heat from the fire was so intense that nearby buildings, specifically a smaller set of apartments across the street, were evacuated due to concern they would ignite. Damage to this building included ten apartments and approximately 15 vehicles. Around 30 people were evacuated; the Red Cross was called to the scene to work with those impacted by the neighboring blaze.
Quick action from firefighting crews prevented the fire from destroying the apartment building. Over 17 units and 60 firefighters took just over an hour to get the fire under control, however hotspots at the site were being monitored well after sunrise on Tuesday. No injuries were reported by responding crews from Tucson Fire and Tucson Police Department.
The Mark at Tucson sits on 2.56 acres and will have 154-units with 595-beds in a layered 4- going to 6-story building with a five-story parking structure when completed. Amenities will be similar to the Retreat Tucson, at 22nd Street and Park Avenue, with pool, study lounge with computer lab, fitness center and secure bicycle storage.
On Wednesday, both cranes were deemed stable and remain at the site according to TFD. Cause of fire remains unknown.
