PIMA COUNTY, April 4, 2024 — The Northwest YMCA Pima County Community Center has provided the public with swimming pools, art classes, and other recreational amenities for over two decades, thanks to the enduring partnership between the County and YMCA of Southern Arizona.
That partnership will continue.
The Pima County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 on April 2 to renew the County’s operating agreement with the YMCA of Southern Arizona for another ten years, ensuring that the popular recreational center at 7770 N. Shannon Road can continue to serve the community.
Pima County operates the facility in cooperation with the YMCA of Southern Arizona. The County operates the pools and art center and maintains the parking lot and grounds, while the YMCA serves the other recreational amenities.
“The renewal of the operating agreement between the YMCA of Southern Arizona and Pima County is a perfect example of a community partnership that benefits everyone involved,” said Victor Pereira, director of Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation.
“The original agreement was signed 25 years ago to ensure that members of the community would always have a place to gather in the pursuit of both physical and mental health. This new 10-year agreement continues that pursuit and allows the County to plan for the next decade knowing we have a reliable partner.”
The facility's construction was partially funded by bonds approved by County voters in 1997, and the center opened to the public in December 2002. The original agreement was made in 1999 and was set to expire on April 12, 2024.
The Northwest YMCA Pima County Community Center provides a wide array of amenities to the public, including an aerobics studio, a basketball gymnasium, and a state-of-the-art cardio wellness center and weight room. It also offers youth and adult sports programs and fitness classes.
The facility is also home to the Thad Terry Aquatic Center, which offers recreational and competitive swimming. It is located next to the County’s Ann Day Community Park.
