PIMA COUNTY, (May 23, 2025) – A condemned apartment building in midtown is set to be transformed into a stormwater park, courtesy of the Pima County Regional Flood Control District.
The condemned apartment building at 202 E. Mohave Road will be demolished on Tuesday, May 27. After demolition, the property will be fenced off and regularly monitored until summer 2026.
“We’re excited to turn this site into a stormwater park that will reduce flooding and offer the community a lasting, green space,” said Eric Shepp, Flood Control director. “Working together with the neighborhood, we’ll create a space that’s both functional and truly valuable for those who live here.”
Stormwater parks reduce localized flooding by capturing stormwater in basins that nourish native plants by allowing water to soak into the ground. Stormwater parks also provide additional benefits, including green space, walking paths, and shade trees.
Starting in the summer of 2026, public outreach will begin to inform the shaping of the final project.
“This project goes beyond flood control – it’s an opportunity to enhance the quality of life for residents by creating a sustainable space that brings nature closer to the community,” said Shepp.
