TUCSON, Ariz. (June 4, 2025) – A major milestone is visibly underway as the structure of the new 175,000-square-foot indoor ice plex begins rising along Interstate 10 and Kino Parkway, marking a major step forward for the Mosaic Quarter development.

This transformative project on Tucson’s south side, hailed as Pima County’s first billion-dollar public-private investment, will feature world-class sports, recreation, and entertainment venues designed to reflect the community’s needs.

“Get excited because it’s just the beginning,” said Lindsay Knott, Executive Vice President for Mosaic Quarter.

The ice plex is part of Phase I, which also includes a 131,000-square-foot field house soon to rise just across the Julian Wash. When completed, the field house will host a variety of sports, including wrestling, archery, pickleball, badminton, cheer, and dance.

Mosaic Quarter leadership is actively engaging with the community to refine programming and facility usage based on resident input. “We’re asking what sports the community wants, how many kids are participating, or how many adults want to learn to skate,” Knott explained. “That feedback will shape the facility’s offerings.”

Among the advanced infrastructure already underway are utility plants and solar integration, as well as a network of water tubes that connect the entire complex for energy-efficient heating and cooling. The tops of 11 rainwater storage tanks are already in place and will help support ice resurfacing operations.

“This project will truly transform what’s possible for sports and entertainment in Southern Arizona,” Knott said. “And now is the time for the community to help shape what it becomes.”

The ice plex is scheduled to open in January 2027, with the field house following shortly thereafter. Financial assistance for youth sports memberships will be available through an affiliated foundation.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the planning process by submitting their interests and feedback HERE.

The iceplex opens in January 2027, and the field house will open shortly after that.
