PIMA COUNTY – The Pima County Regional Flood Control District is looking for public feedback on development of its final master plan for the Canoa Hills Trails Open Space Park in Green Valley.
Members of the public have until March 19 to offer their ideas on site features, amenities, or potential uses for the park by completing a brief survey. Preliminary results from that survey will be shared at a public meeting from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 19 in the Board of Supervisors Hearing Room, 130 W. Congress, first floor.
Those not able to attend the in-person meeting may watch it and ask questions via Pima County’s YouTube page. Those attending the public meeting in person must follow the Covid-19 guidelines below. In-person attendance is limited to 34 people.
At that meeting, District staff will present an overview of the master plan’s design concepts and seek additional feedback from members of the public. A second questionnaire related to the park’s design concepts will also be available after the public meeting.
The Feb. 19 meeting and follow-up questionnaire will provide an opportunity for the public and other interested parties to address concerns and help the County better form an adaptive re-use plan that will serve the needs of the park for area residents and visitors, which will then serve as the park’s master plan.
The District's primary goals for the park include preserving and enhancing native plant communities, mitigating erosion issues, and enhancing floodplain function, which will allow the park to continue to be used for passive recreation and as a habitat for wildlife.
Canoa Hills Trails Open Space Park is located on 139 acres and occupies the former Canoa Hills Golf Course in Green Valley. It consists of seven parcels that sit in natural drainage areas between existing elevated suburban developments. The site straddles a major north-south vehicular route (Camino del Sol), with residential streets and culverts under major roadways connecting the parcels.
Since acquiring the property through a donation, the District has met with adjacent property owners, homeowners’ associations, and other interested stakeholders to develop three potential Master Plan design concepts for the Park. The concepts are centered around Stewardship through Learning, Connection and Movement, and Active Recreation. All concepts are economical, functional, and efficient, which will minimize the need for park maintenance while actively promoting resilient native plant communities.
In order to ensure the health and safety of the general public, the following guidelines will be enforced in the Pima County Board of Supervisors Hearing Room:
- All attendees must undergo a wellness check.
- Any attendee exhibiting COVID-19 or influenza-like symptoms will be prohibited from entering the Hearing Room.
- All attendees must wear a mask at all times while in the Hearing Room.
- Attendees must sanitize their hands before entering the Hearing Room.
- While in the Hearing Room, acceptable physical distancing must be maintained at all times. Seating will be spaced to accommodate recommended physical distancing.
