The final decision of the Rio Nuevo Downtown Redevelopment and Revitalization’s District Board of Directors as to which private developer it will partner with on the 8.5 acre arena lot is expected to take place this Tuesday, August 12th after Nor-Gen and Peach Properties make oral presentations to the Board.
This last major piece of vacant land is vital to the development of Downtown Tucson and the volunteer board is being extra cautious in its decision-making.
“It's a gateway parcel that will help anchor the western edge of downtown. If people care about Tucson, and downtown, they ought to come listen to the presenters and judge things for themselves,” said Mark Irvin, Secretary.
"New legislation allows us to engage in development other than a hotel and we believe this parcel, adjacent to the modern streetcar, can be a key development for downtown" said Fletcher McCusker, Chairman in the RFP. "We invite innovative, mixed use development and, as part our recent partnership strategy, look forward to partnering with others to activate this valuable downtown lot."
As part of the global settlement of lawsuits with the City of Tucson the Rio Nuevo District battled for and eventually received the deed to this 8.5 acre parcel along the freeway between Congress and Granada.
The public meeting date and time will be August 12, 2014 commencing at 9 AM at The Arizona State Building, Room 222, 400 West Congress Street, Tucson.
